The South Vancouver Island Housing Society
Our Mission and Governance
Legion Manor Victoria is operated by the South Vancouver Island Housing Society, which is a not-for-profit Society run by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of members from different Royal Canadian Legions in the Greater Victoria area; part of the British Columbia/Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. The zone encompasses all of Southern Vancouver Island, including Pender and Mayne Island. It is very active, with 16 branches boasting over 10,000 members.
The Legion is a compassionate organization that cares about our veterans, youth and community. All branches welcome visitors and newcomers as guests or members. Whether your interest is in dancing, games, darts, cribbage, horseshoes, sports, BBQ dinners, or just a friendly atmosphere and camaraderie you will find it at "The Branch" of your choice.
Many of the different branches help to raise monies to assist in the operation of Legion Manor Victoria. Examples of the projects that have been financed by the various branches are a 70-inch television in our living room, hardwood floors in our lobby and dining room as well as new linens, chairs for the dining room and a beautiful wooden pavilion for residents to gather and socialize. Poppy fund donations have also helped in repaving portions of the walking trail around the perimeter of the property as well as refurbishment of our well used sunroom which included a heat pump and furniture.
Legion Manor was able to purchase a 12-seat bus with space for 2 wheelchairs through the Poppy funds generous contributions. We have also been fortunate to purchase a 7-passenger van, that enables Legion Manor to provide residents transportation to medical or dental appointments throughout the Greater Victoria area at a nominal cost.
Veterans House Victoria
Located in beautiful Colwood, BC, Veterans House Victoria provides safe transitional housing and connection to services to help ex-military personnel integrate back into society. Peer-supported by volunteers and a live-in caretaker, this program connects Veterans with services such as benefits through Veterans Affairs Canada, career transition services, and military-trauma-informed counselling. Basics such as bus passes and food vouchers are supplied. When Veterans are ready, they are supported in finding permanent housing. Veterans House Victoria is run in partnership with Legion Manor Victoria, who provides day-to-day support for the program.
Studies show that approximately one third of Veterans face significant difficulties transitioning from military service to civilian life. This dramatically increases their risk of mental illness, addictions and homelessness. The trauma experienced by Veterans is unique and requires specific supports.
